Quirky Music - Positive or Negative?

Post by Picardster » Sun May 30, 2021 9:06 am

Hi Fellow Passengers,

recently one of my tunes was categorized as "quirky" music. First I thought this has a negative touch. But the critique itself didn't read so.

Meanwhile I asked Dr. Google a bit about the meaning.

And I'd like to read your opinion about the term "quirky" in connection with music.

Is it positive, negative, just weird, weird in a good way - what is ist?

Ahhhh btw. I have a DISCO library and used auto-tagging there. And some or my tracks were marked as "quirky" So the AI basically seems to be of the same opinion :-)

When i think of 'quirky', The Talking Heads and Zappa come to mind...music like that.

Quirky can send you ahead of the pack. I see it as a compliment.

My 2 cents.
Bad art can make you laugh
Good art can make you think
Great art can destroy you

(Did he just quote himself?? Yes! Yes I did!)

That reminds me of a comment to my music a couple of years age when someone said I sound like Zappa's lovechild ;-)

Never had thought of anything like that before - and was never aiming at sounding like Frank ;-)

Don't sweat the quirky critique.

"Why try to fit in when you were born to be amazing?"

Yeah...I can't resist a great quote! :)

Hi Stefan

I had the "too quirky" comment several times before. But one of these quirky tracks eventually became my first deal ever, so... as usual, it depends on the purpose.

Tom
Hi Tom,
The return included a the following quote: "I'd save this for quirky, fun party type acoustic requests." So I don't feel too bad about it. In facht I thought he is right, since my music is a bit off the mainstream. So I decided to add "quirky" as a tag in more songs in my library.

Still, after having read a lot about quirky music; I'm interested in how people on here feel about that term. :-)

I suppose a "serious" artist would not want to appear quirky. Quirky could be something for kids or dramedy/comedy, so, for something not to be taken too seriously. Some may look at this as something more negative.

Tom
Found the following quote on "quirky" on some website:
Quirky............weird, in a good way
I also thought at first this is a negative connotation. Not sure now that is valid everywhere :-)
Frankly, if quirky is also kind of Avantgarde and different from the streamline, then I'd rather be perceived as quirky in full:-)

It has a positive ring to it in my book as well... avantgarde, strange, reconsidering standard values, out-of-the-box, terms like that. I just happened to label one of my own songs "quirky" today (before reading this thread btw), so yeah, nothing bad in it, just don't send it to a "we want hummable top-40 stuff" listing!

I'm sure quirky music gets licensed but probably less often as other styles. If you make it, make sure it's as good as the quirky stuff you hear on TV.

I probably wouldn't major in it though if you want to stack up a bunch of placements

Maybe associated with whimsical, fun, . . . Novel, unique?

Definitely NOT negative.

2 Cents worth. :)
