The vocabulary of rock, pop and country is really slim. I feel it is under 2,000 words and maybe even under 1,000. I wish someone would do a statistical study.Sometimes a good song manages to use an unusual or a fancy word successfully. The Beatles used "opaque." How many songs has that been in? Rodney Crowell's song Heartbroke finds a use for "impending." I proudly use "glowered" in one of my songs.

Quote:How about:"spreading my wings, I've learned to fly" or something to that effect. It's STILL used in hit songs.Any others??As a publisher, the first song I placed was from an excellent songwriter in the UK. The placement was for an artist doing her debut CD. The song is called "Butterfly" and has all those lyrics... "spread my wings", "learning how to fly", etc. The song is very hook-y and generally well received by those who hear it. So, that brings me to what I often say:(1) Follow songwriting rules and guidelines including avoidance over overused phrases and cliches.(2) A killer hook overrides all the other rules. Casey
