Umm, seems to me that Yesterday, Imagine, Surfer Girl were all top 40. And they sold a ton, so they were commercial. How are you defining your terms?

Actually, I don't Shak. No kidding. I think a number of the songs mentioned were written to make money, aka crass commercialism. (Irving Berlin said he wasn't above writing for money). The Beach Boys were a great deal about money. Yap harburg was certainly a commercial writing, writing to a commercial spec. They (the ones you mentioned) are all great songs and do have the chill factor. I just am not sure what you mean by top 40 crass commercialism not allowed. If I use that criteria, I'd have to exclude most songs I love, except for some art songs.

Certainly there are others in the list that were also written for the pure craft of writing, and not entirely motivated by commericialism. That's not to say some of these artists didn't write for money in their careers. Many of the songs listed are now considered standards or signature songs. While "Twist & Shout" may fall into the T40 realm, I don't think "Yesterday" was written to be a hit, it just became one...Blessings,Craig

Try searching up Dan Fogelberg, "River Of Souls" and try it on for size. He also did a song called "To the Morning" that is very light but beautiful. One more DF song is "Mountains to the Sea". IMO a tremendous singer/songwriter. oh,BTW, none of these, as far as I know, were top 40.Walter327

Meanwhile, I can only say in my defense that I was unaware, then and now, that those songs had actually chilled thru me. I'm not calling myself a liar... merely questioning my facts. After all , I'm not always as alert as I should be, and I seldom wear the proper coat for the right occasion. Which may or may not mean one of two things. But if I had to bet on the unknown. I'd put all my money on the remote possibility that I may have heard these songs. Hell, I might have loved these songs. Loved and listened, heard and loved, back and forth, over and over till my bones froze still, while my ears went numb, as my memory cells died off. Chilled so deep my coat wouldn't matter. Nothing matters when your love sends you into Musical hypothermia. Nothing! Brrrrrr. Is that what happened? That's what happened, right? RanG
