Recommendations For Speakers For Recording
Hi there,
I have an iMac and record with Logic Pro X can anyone recommend a good quality set of speakers to use with this. I'm realizing my twenty year old altec speakers are just not up to the job.
Thanks very much, Martyn

Hi, Martyn;
Reference & play-back speakers/monitors, or mix-friendly monitors? Do you care which, or both?

Assuming you want to invest in the reasonable entry-end of the market, are looking for monitors for a small room, and are not too worried about reproducing sub-bass, here's a few to consider.....

https://www.thomann.de/gb/krk_rp5_rokit_g3.htm
https://www.thomann.de/gb/kali_audio_lp_6.htm
https://www.thomann.de/gb/adam_t5v.htm
[Careful with prices, they're often priced in singles rather than in pairs.]
They're all reasonably good performers for their price, and unless you have a good sized/shaped room with some sound treatment even more expensive monitors might not offer any advantages. However, if your room is good then you might want to look at some more refined monitors.

Graham (UK). Still composing a little faster than decomposing, and 100% HI.

Re: Recommendations For Speakers For Recording
Martyn,
Up until a year ago I was using my Mac/Logic Pro X with a desktop speaker/subwoofer set that I'd bought at ALDI for like $30 several years ago. Haha. ( To be fair, for consumer speakers, the ALDI speakers sounded great) Last April or so I finally got a set of actual monitors-- a pair of Kali LP-6 speakers. I can't speak to super high end monitors, but getting these was such a massive step up compared to what I was using. I think they were about $300 a pair. My brother also bought a pair for his studio setup-- which is nice because I don't have to lug my monitors back and forth. All of the ones on Telefunkin's list are good options for starter monitors, from what I've heard and read.
In addition to using these speakers for recording, I'm always playing my guitars through amp-sim software like Amplitube 5/Guitar Rig 6 instead of using real amps/cabinets. So I like having speakers like these to play my guitars through. I find they work well for that.
My current room is unfortunately pretty small, but I recently got some room correction software (ARC3) and it's working nicely with my monitor setup to give me consistent accuracy when mixing. I would at least budget some money into room treatment and/or correction software.
Cheers,
Ted

Genelec and Adam are good brands. Listen to them beforehand. You need to love the sound, as it will feed back to you and encourage you to perform better.
