Recording Acoustic Piano
Hello all -
I am going to try and record my acoustic piano for a project and looking to get some new mics. I don't have a huge budget and I am thinking of either the Rode NT-5 Stereo Pair or the Oktava MK-012 Stereo Pair.
Any suggestions?
thanks

Re: Recording Acoustic Piano
I can't recommend a specific model but I've always been impressed with Audio-technica for inexpensive mics. eo.

Re: Recording Acoustic Piano
I've never recorded a piano, but from everything I've ever read on the subject leads me to conclude it is something of an art. I think if I had to record a piano, I'd probably start with a ribbon mic and a nice room, and go from there. The natural compression of the ribbon mic might smooth any nasty resonance you might encounter. I am just guessing, but I would say the room or space and the resonance of the piano is what you are hoping to capture and balance.

Re: Recording Acoustic Piano
i have one of those (Oktava MK-012 moded) and it is unreal, it is my GO TO mic. Michael Joly is the man, I am gonna get some more of his mic's
another idea that i have wanted to do is get 2 akg 451 b's and mic the lows on the piano and then the highs
(i have not tried this but this is what i where i would start)

KC
I have tried recording my piano with what I would call at best, mediocre results. Please let us know how it goes for you.
Good Luck!

Re: Recording Acoustic Piano
Modified Oktavas are tremendous bang-per-buck; you might also look into M-Audio Sputniks on a bar, for grand piano. There are a couple of other "lollipop" mics that are well-regarded, too.
