Personally I record in mono and render it as stereo after mixing

Re: Recording Question
Hi Vicki,
Thanks for the reply.
Congratulations on your successes.
Judging from your site, I have a lot of work to do.
On the scoring competition video posted on your site ,
do you have to score all of the gun fire and sound effects, or is that inserted after by someone else?
Take care.
Thanks for the reply.

Re: Recording Question
Thanks for checking my site! I started right here on the TAXI forum and learned most of what I know from the folks here in Peer to Peer and from the TAXI screeners & Taxi TV. For the West World competition video, the clip was supplied with dialogue, car engine & moving sounds, 2 explosions, and the gun fire.bgusch wrote: ↑Sun Jun 14, 2020 2:55 pmHi Vicki,

Re: Recording Question
Hey Vicki, I'm trying to get into scoring myself. If I haven't spent any money on tone generators, is there one you would say everyone should start with? Thanks, J
I don't listen to guitar players who listen to guitar players. I listen to guitar players who listen to sax players.

Re: Recording Question
I don't have a tone generator (I had to look it up to see what it was); I do have a number of synthesizers and various other VSTs, etc. Do you mean something like Serum or Omnisphere?jerryjennings wrote: ↑Mon Jun 15, 2020 11:59 amHey Vicki, I'm trying to get into scoring myself. Re: Recording Question
Yes I think that's the answer I was looking for. Do you use those two a lot?

Re: Recording Question
I personally have Omnisphere as a main synth but I layer it with other things as well, I have EW Composer Cloud and there are various sound effects in different things they provide. Spitefire's LABS is cool (and free). My DAW, Waveform, comes with Biotek, too.jerryjennings wrote: ↑Mon Jun 15, 2020 8:52 pmYes I think that's the answer I was looking for. Re: Recording Question
It depends on the source you are recording: Sources that are typically recorded in mono are for instance a single vocalist or an electric bass guitar. There are other sources that are typically recorded in stereo e.g. a string quartet, a choir, acoustic drum overhead mics. With other instruments it is a matter of taste or it depends on the role the instrument will play in the track/mix (e.g. acoustic guitars are sometimes recorded in stereo but others prefer recording them with a single mic).
Many virtual instruments and hardware synths or multi-effects are 'stereo' out of the box and in your mix it is therefore up to you as to how you want to use them (mono or stereo).
When it comes to the mix itself (your submission) I would say the general rule is stereo. The only example I can think of where it could make sense to submit a mono mix would be a retro sounding track that you want to sound like a vintage mono recording.
I hope that makes sense.
Cheers,
Matt

Re: Recording Question
Thanks that is great information. I tried composer cloud for a while, but I wasn't really able to get it functional with it. I mean, I could work it, but I just wasn't grooving with it. Way back in my PC days I had this pirated program called Ederol "Orchestral". Every note I hit on that thing just came out beautiful. It was so no-brainer I could just focus on music. And I started writing for this movie and came up with some really cool stuff I'm still proud of. That deal fell through, and I've only focused on cues since then. And all of the programs I've tried to use just feel clunky. I might have a look at that LABS you mentioned. I've also considered Vienna as a possibility for the orchestral sounds.hummingbird wrote: ↑Mon Jun 15, 2020 11:29 pmI personally have Omnisphere as a main synth but I layer it with other things as well, I have EW Composer Cloud and there are various sound effects in different things they provide.
