Once in a while I have an artist I'm producing that wants a release, but even that is rare for me (well, unless it's for a label of course... then you sign a lot more than a simple release! HA!). I don't think I've ever had to sign one for mixing or mastering.

Yup, far as I know, mastering's still strictly work for hire, and making huge fundamental changes to someone else's work is kinda frowned on.
