Maybe the real questions are what exactly is bandlab and what is their plan for becoming profitable? Roland had it for a few years until they sold it to Gibson, now Gibson sold it. I'd be surprised if there was much intellectual property that hasn't been compromised already.

I'd say the latest Sonar version (Platinum) had some good intellectual property in its design ... ARA integration, screensets, plug ins, pro channel, take lanes, smart tool, strong audio & midi editing tools ... plus the command center for managing updates. But it also had bugs, at least on my system, which at times were a real buzz-kill.

Also right before sudden death, they released a phone app called Momentum ... a simple to use multi track recorder, with file import into your main Sonar DAW ... I had just started to use it when it disappeared into the ether.

Whatever happens, they confirmed last week that:-

It will no longer be called Sonar ( as they didn't buy the company )

It will be their flagship product

It will be a desktop based DAW

It will be ready to launch sooner than expected

Well folks, Sonar has risen Phoenix like from the flames as...." Cakewalk "

And it's free ! ...and I don't mean cripple-ware lite type of free..the actual whole DAW that was Sonar Platinum $499 minus a few 3rd party extras..notably the basic Melodyne that came bundled and a few VSTi's they didn't own.

Thanks! This is becoming one crazy software story. The resurrected Cakewalk vision sounds pretty interesting.

The old Sonar forum is still very active, a great resource for details. Tons of information, experiences and questions out there already.

For the most part users seem to be pretty excited and happy with the free Cakewalk by Bandlab download. For most users it is running smooth along side their former Sonar, not disabling the old Sonar but sharing plug-in's etc.

This thread is one of the most active, with many responses from Bandlab http://forum.cakewalk.com/Cakewalk-By-B ... 43935.aspx

There are many other good threads.

Another chapter in the story, now Gibson has filed for bankruptcy protection

Putting aside their handling of Cakewalk, I hope Gibson will come out of this and be a successful company again.
