RMS and levels

Hey group!
Everywhere I read I get different stories on RMS and average levels.
Whats the preference here at taxi? Ive been running around -12 and -9
What are the peaks needed to be at?

It's genre specific. You don't need a Folk song blaring away at -7dB RMS.

I suggest around -14 to -10dB RMS as a general rule.

I want to be competitively loud. I always do a two step compression and limiting in the two-mix that peaks at just under 0.0 dB. It's almost as much as I use in mastering for a CD. (CDs are so yesterday...hahahaha)

I don't pay much attention to Root Mean Squared.

Genre-specific it is indeed, so it's difficult to give specific advice, but here's some: get Bob Katz' Mastering Audio; The Art & The Science.

You might wish to go directly to page 11: Recipe For Radio Success, but that would be a mistake.
