Sad Strings Instrumental critique. Aiming for my first forward.

Post by SteveR » Tue Jan 17, 2023 12:27 pm

Hi All

I'm a new member aiming for my first forward (and then many more after that). I've had a few rejections, which I fully appreciate why. I've since spent a lot of time trying to raise my game, both in recording, production, but also the other very important aspect of paying attention to the listing request and references. Hopefully this one will crack it, but before I submit it, feedback appreciated, so that, if necessary, I might be able to make some tweaks to get it over the line.

Send them emotionally moving Instrumental Cues that utilize Piano and Strings as their only instrumentation and conjure up feelings of sadness and sorrow. Your submissions should have wistful melodies, top-notch instrumentation, and engaging arrangements with plenty of dynamics, forward motion, and interest. Please be sure your production is polished and any virtual piano or string instruments you may choose to use are realistic sounding and state-of-the-art.

TAXI Tip: We suggest trying to keep your submissions on the simpler side, melodically. Your job is more about establishing a melancholy mood rather than winning "Composer of the Year"!

Submissions should be about 2 minutes long, give or take, and have non-faded, buttoned/stinger endings. Do NOT copy the references in any way, shape, or form. Use them only as a general guide for tempo, tone, and overall vibe. Broadcast Quality is needed.

Sorry, the link doesn't work.
(BTW it would help to post the reference track links too if you want relevant feedback)
Graham (UK). Still composing a little faster than decomposing, and 100% HI.

Sorry about the link not working. I’ve seen a few posts where people’s links to their TAXI artist page don’t seem to work. Must be a rookie mistake on my part. Yet to figure that one out.

I’ve uploaded it to Soundcloud. I set it as “private” to avoid unwanted “outside” attention. Hopefully this link will work:

Links to the references as follows:

https://youtu.be/XMGkgyazAvU

https://youtu.be/Tut4DByTm9c

Listening to the references again, I already think I should be adding some background orchestral strings, but in any case, I’m open to any feedback, in any aspect. I’m here to learn.

Thanks for taking the time to respond in the first place.

I went ahead and filled it out with some background strings. Also did what I could to fix up some of the solo violin in terms of timing, attack and pitch in a few places. I think it sounds a lot better, but any of you seasoned pro's out there, please comment. I only have a few days left to fix anything and i'm going to be busy with other commitments too. I'll have a couple of days early next week before the deadline to make any possible tweaks. Feedback appreciated!

So sorry guys! I updated the piece but I didn’t update the link on here (what a fool!). The listing is now closed (yet to hear the results) but in the interest of improving anyway, if you do have a moment to listen and critique, I would be most grateful. TIA
