Sanjaya Malakar and American Idol
Anyone been keeping up with this controversy....the fact that Sanjaya, the supposed worst of the AI singers still stays on the show while singers more talented than him are being voted off the show? MSNBC's been saying that websites like votefortheworst.com are keeping Sanjaya alive in an attempt to derail the show's voting mechanisms. Also, shock jock, Howard Stern has asked all his listeners to vote for Sanjaya because he feels American Idol is hurting the music scene. Teenagers, also said to like Sanjaya, are keeping him a float. I read where this all threatens the future of AI because Simon has said that he will leave the show if Sanjaya wins. Something like this could really rock the music world as we know it now because AI seems to have gained so much power over the years.I have to say that I wouldn't be too disappointed...while I watch the show at times, maybe they need a shakeup like this so music wouldn't be all about image....the music itself (and not the image of the singer) would become more important like it did in past years.

Chits, I was so proud of that girl last nite, singing through her tears. It's ridiculous they make someone sing an unfamiliar song they just learned, right after losing that contest. No astute artist manager would ever throw his client to the wolves like that. It's weird when you see a singer like Sanjaya still in the competition, when he's compared to the other awesome singers. They bill it as a singing competition, but it never will be. It's no more a singing competition than Billboard or Sound Scan charts. It is a popularity contest. And as any producer or manager knows, it is the accumulation of results over a 5 or 10 year period that actually count$. Winning AI is hardly a ticket to stardom or wealth. What comes after the winning or even losing the contest is more important. I don't like Simon Cowell's manner of insulting contestants, but he certainly is the most willing to tell his truth. Paula is the opposite end of the spectrum, hardly ever willing to say anything derogatory. I did check the contest rules for the new songwriter segment. Sucks for me, I'm Canadian. Re: Sanjaya Malakar and American Idol
Hey, Steve....well, I'll admit that I haven't watched the show in the past month or so, so I don't even know who got voted off...hope it wasn't Melinda or Lakisha. I'd blame the judges for a lot of this....they shouldn't have even let Sanjaya in the final 24 in the first place. It makes me wonder if Sanjaya's just a 'plant' to raise the show's ratings....maybe Simon is just threatening to leave so that more people will tune in and watch the show. I like Simon too....I used to actually detest him before I started watching the show. I heard about him mostly in the media, and I thought he was nasty. But after tuning in this year (although I don't watch a lot of episodes all the time), I've come to respect Simon's honesty. He always seems to be spot on, and I can't understand why everyone boos him. That being said, I don't think Sanjaya is that bad of a singer. He sounds like a young Stevie Wonder to me. Maybe it's just the crazy get ups he wears, but that's part of showbiz. I don't think Sanjaya's as good as Melinda or Laskisha of course.I can't get the link you posted to open, but I thought AI wasn't going to have the songwriting contest this year....thought they had postponed that...thanks for posting it.

Re: Sanjaya Malakar and American Idol
This Sanjaya thing is a joke, but so is the pop music biz, so I understand I'm very happy that Phil (?), the guy with the shaved head, is still in it. I just don't get why the judges hate him. Even Tony Bennett said he was a great singer. I thought his standard (that he sang to his wife) was fabulous. What do the judges want, some lame Vegas lounge singer with "the moves" like that dork that subbed for Tony B. last night!? He was TERRIBLE, but he's "a pro." Anyway, as Simon says "It's a SINGING competition!" I agree with him about the nice legs, BTW, but let the best SINGER win!Ern

Buble's from my town. And he's just to darn cocky sometimes. Phil is the shiz, man. That song was wonderful!I predict the legs will win, and not because she's the best singer.steve

Unfortunately I stopped looking at AI as a singing competition a long time ago. It is a marketing show which by the time all the contestants are chosen, it then becomes a popularity contest. If Sanjaya wins I wouldn't be too surprised.
