Re: Screener headphones?
Hey Billy,
I agree with Casey.....they don't all use the same ones.
Also....I ONLY write and mix with headphones (Sennheiser HD 280's) and usually listen in the car.
I been doing this for years and have had alot of success with it......your mileage may vary!
Thanks,
Tim

Buy a pair of cans from Sonarworks that are pre calibrated with their reference software. Then they will be flat and your mixes should translate better regardless of the playback device

Ronan told me to try out the Shure SRH840's. Wow. I love them. Super comfortable and detailed. They're all I buy now.

I agree with Casey and everyone else who says it doesn't really matter! I mean, once people choose what best suites them, they use them as a reference. It's kinda like rose colored glasses, you can still interpret various colors, you still recognize that the sky is blue and not red, if not, you wouldn't choose them. I've never heard of a case where anyone changed their mind about the music by using different headphones or speakers. That's not to say that they don't prefer the sound of one headphone or speaker over others, only that it doesn't change their preferences about the music, or referencing one song against another on the same medium.

I visited the offices, Briagha gave me the tour. There's a standard set, but most screeners bring their own. Side note, I've stopped recommending headsets, cuz every head is different. That said, Audio-Technica makes good, affordable headphones, some of which might suit your needs and budget. Personally, I like the ATH M50s, cuz I need a closed back, so as not to bleed into nearby microphones, and the earcups and cable are user-replaceable.

and really referencing against existing commercially successful stuff (whether it be production music from big libraries that is super high quality) or tv spots on Youtube, or commercially available songs on iTunes etc matters a whole lot more than what exactly you are listening on.
You can always make good decisions when you compare.
Not so much if you just listen to your piece in a vacuum.

Re: Screener headphones?
So - back to Billy's question - I'd be curious how many screeners use those Shure cans.neilmctavish wrote:Ronan told me to try out the Shure SRH840's. Wow. I love them. Super comfortable and detailed. They're all I buy now.
For what it's worth to those who might care:
I started with the Sony MDR-7506. It became apparent that they weren't terribly 'honest', comparing mixes against monitors... but I still liked them,
that is - until the ear pads began to fall apart. I'd had other Sony products that had short life-spans - and this time I decided: no more Sony products for me.
Meanwhile: liking to compare mixes on several devices, I found that:
ear buds sound good, but juice the bass & low end;
The Scarlett Studio HP60 that came with my Focusrite 2i2 bundle are pretty honest, comfortable, and "in the middle";
the Sony's are the thinnest of the 3 on the low end.
The other devices I listen to test mixes on are my regular old PC with Logitech add-ons: they're pretty similar to the Scarlett phones;
and I use this system to test the mixes at very low volume; which can reveal a lot - good and bad... or, in need of fixing.
and JBL 305s on the MAC.
Thanks for that recommendation, Neil - I think they'll be what I get to replace the Sony-Baloney phones.
Billy - will you let me/us know what you end up with?
Cheers.

FWIW - those run $160 through amazon.com; at least that's what the order for them was today.neilmctavish wrote:Ronan told me to try out the Shure SRH840's. Wow. I love them. Super comfortable and detailed. They're all I buy now.
