Separate Rivers ©2018 Robert George BMI

Lenore met Joey at a teenage party in the woods
She was used to finer things, diamonds and designer rings
And she’d grown up in a ritzy neighborhood
He was just a drop-out working in his uncle’s body shop
He was scarred…his boots were scuffed, but his country roots were tough
And he’d had some run-ins with the local cops

Lovers often whisper
Fate is like the deep blue sea
And love is separate rivers
Flowing to their destiny

Well, they stole a bottle of his uncle’s Cutty Sark
Then they shared wild whiskey dreams, and they plotted risky schemes
Underneath a moonlit pine tree in the park
Then one night they swiped his uncle’s thirty-eight
Stole a rusty, smoky car, robbed a karaoke bar
Then got busted at a roadblock near the interstate

Lovers often whisper
Fate is like the deep blue sea
And love is separate rivers
Flowing to their destiny

Though that pistol wasn’t loaded
Joe got fifteen years to pay his dues
She attended Harvard law school
Her name never even made the news
He went back to working for his uncle
When he fin’lly made parole
She was working in a concrete jungle
Fighting not to lose her soul

Sometimes it’s impossible to bury yesterday
Hades knows no middle ground, someone in that little town
Robbed a tavern, shot the clerk and stole a car to get away
Cops arrested Joe although there was no evidence
He’d been set up for a fall, but he gave Lenore a call
And she took a night flight out to his defense

Lovers often whisper
Fate is like the deep blue sea
And love is separate rivers
Flowing to their destiny

Well, Lenore convinced the court to set poor Joey free
Then they shared new whiskey dreams, laughed about old risky schemes
Sipping Cutty Sark beneath an old pine tree

Lovers often whisper
Fate is like the deep blue sea
And love is separate rivers
Flowing to their destiny

Yes, love is separate rivers
love is separate rivers
Flowing to their destiny…
