my donkey Ezmerelda and me

Post by feaker66 » Mon Jun 07, 2021 11:23 am

I was watching Gunsmoke last week and noticed the companionship and love between Festus and his donkey Ruth. Then I thought about trading in the Camry for a donkey

Re: shooting for the taxi listing about going green

Funny, quirky, catchy and unique. Great work! Some shades of John Prine, here. The lyrics, vocals and guitar work are really strong. My only suggestions are in regards to a few minor productions issues. The drums are pretty low in the mix, I think you could raise them a good bit without risking over powering the vocals. The vocals themselves are very well performed and recorded, but a bit dry. Just a touch of room reverb (like a 1 sec decay maybe) and/or a little bit of slapback delay would soften it up a little, IMO. Really nice song-writing, congrats! (BTW, love the donkey sound effect!)

Fun! There's not really a listing about going green, though, right?

Hi Blake Glad you found the track unique. Yes I held the drums back to hear the words a little better. Easy to boost that. There isn't anything on the vocals. I struggle at finding something that doesn't cloud the track. I will experiment with that yet. Thanks so much for taking the time

Yep, I know what you mean. If its sounding muddy, try reducing the decay time on the reverb (anything under 1 s will sound pretty mild) and/or reduce the wet/dry ratio. There's also usually a "high pass filter" knob on reverb plug ins. If you set that at like 1000 Hz (1khz) only the high end gets reverbed, which can also reduce the muddiness. Good luck!

Really cute song, way off the beaten track (particularly the vox) but that may just be exactly what they're looking for in this context!

I haven't ever tried individually tweaking reverb. I grab a studio one plug in that says cathedral. It says 20 % and I usually turn it down to like 6 %. Same with an analog delay that says "sweeten the vocal" and turn that down a bunch. I turned up the drums just now. It helped...good catch....carry on
