1 Vote for "Google Beat Leasing" unless your meaning is to do a Google search for "Beat Leasing."

What a drag it is to work with a language where words can be both nouns and verbs simultaneously ;)

Looks like most people who might lease our beats on sites like Beatstars don't have and don't know how to use a Performing Rights Organization. If I understand it correctly it means you don't get your mechanical royalties unless you can hunt them down and make them sign up. You won't get performance royalties either. There's no ISRC of your song. There's no IPI of your song. There's no UPC code. You don't know after they leased it if they even used it. And if they used it, you don't know who ultimately used it, what they named it, what album it got on, or when it was published. Lastly, you can't sign up for them so you can get paid unless they register with Sound Exchange which they've never even heard of and probably couldn't be bothered with.

Beatstars is quite popular, I tried them out for a while. The problem with beats is that the market is so truly saturated right now, it's really, really hard to stand out. Is your goal to find artists to top-line over them, or are you looking for tv underscore use? I've written a ton of beats and had plenty of placements, but I'm seeing less demand right now for beats. I think a lot of libraries have plenty so they are looking for other genres.

The advice I give is to watch shows that use the type of music you create, then look at the ending credits to see where they got their music. Usually you will see a "music provided by" listing. Then you can contact that library with a nicely worded introduction and see if they are accepting music.

Hi Paulie,

my goal is to make money with what I enjoy doing and my aptitudes. Looks like Beatstars is popular with beat makers but perhaps not so much with music buyers. Looks like they're hoping for a miracle.

I'd like to work at the highest level I can. Although I may not be ready for entire film scores just yet, I'm not that far off as far as my composing ability. My studio skills have recently been given an overhaul learning where the pregain shoould be set, how better to EQ , and ducking the bass to protect the sound of the bass drum, etc..

So I want to try my hand at TV and movie cues. After I get busy on that I'd like to also be able to focus on Taxi listings.

So, the best way to get successful at TV cues is to watch a lot of tv, listen carefully to the music being used, take notes regarding instrumentation and style, and then create music in the genres that you are most comfortable with.

You might try focusing on Taxi listings sooner than later, because the feedback you receive from screeners can be very helpful. Combine that with posting your music here in the forum and you can learn a ton, as well as prevent wasting a lot of time trying to do things on your own.

Once your music is up to the proper level of quality you can start submitting to libraries directly. But, be smart about it, do your research first. Fins shows that use the type of music you write, then create a few tracks for a demo playlist that you can pitch. Watch the credits at the end of these shows and you can sometimes find out which libraries the show gets is music from. Then you can pitch them, but only do so by following their submission rules and by making sure your music is worthy. Don't want to burn any bridges. :)
