Simple and not too expensive travel setup

Post by MBantle » Wed Mar 27, 2019 1:39 pm

Dear All,
I will be travelling quite a bit this year (day job) and I am trying to put a simple, effective and affordable travel setup together. I got a decent setup in my project studio at home and for travelling I was thinking of something along the lines of: Macbook Air 2017 (they seem rather affordable these days, even the 'better ones' e.g. I7, +8 GB, 512 SSD - I am a Logic User), Native Instruments Audio 2, Native Instruments A 25 and a good old Rode NT 1 Kit... Of course some decent headphones and I would like to have some monitoring options to take a rest from listing to headphones. Bearing in mind that dimensions are an issue, I am considering to either go for a rigid Auratone clone mono solution (e.g. Avantone) or perhaps one of those bread and butter Mackie CRs...or the slightly more expensive IK Loud Micro...
Any suggestions/thoughts from fellow gearheads :D ? I want to do this on a budget just to have something that can be further produced back home (where I'm all set gear wise).
Cheers,
Matt

I've been traveling a ton this year, I take my studio with me every time.
  • 2013 Macbook Air
  • 500GB internal SSD (Logic installation)
  • 1TB SSD USB3 External drive (holds all of my libraries and projects, I'll be upgrading to 2TB soon)
  • Korg NanoKey2 keyboard
  • old pair of Bose noise canceling headphones, or sometimes Apple earbuds. (traveling with monitors is not realistic when flying, headphones are the way to go). Remember, you are not mastering when traveling so you can do a sanity check when you get back in your regular studio. :)

To be clear, this is almost my entire recording studio, the same Mac I use at home. The only thing missing is my Zoom Tac-8 DAW interface for recording with real microphones.
