Got a 40" smart tv last week.....used it as a PC monitor already...WOW!
Anyone know if these things get viruses? I googled the question, and there seems to be conflicting stories. Most of the sites that came up in search have a bad rating on my Avast antivirus software.....now, how's that for irony.
I'm thinking that if it doesn't have a hard drive, it can't. But it can download apps, so I'm not sure?
Anyone know about these things?
Thanks
Steve

Re: Smart TVs
There is no such thing as a smart TV.
You will not get a virus on your TV.
Buy Norton to protect your computer.

Re: Smart TVs
I'm not so certain about viruses and smart TVs; it probably depends on the operating system, but if there's no drive for a virus to reside on, I should think it would limit your exposure to at least some types of trojans and worms. (keeping in mind that solid-state drives and thumb drives can be just as vulnerable) If you practice sound browsing habits, I should think you'd have little to worry about, so long as you keep your software updated. I am certain I won't use Norton products; they conflict with most of my music software, though this may not be a problem on more modern operating systems or with newer DAWs. I use Microsoft Security Essentials and have been running very smoothly, knock wood.

Re: Smart TVs
Hey Rev, Happy New Year....you've been absent the last few days at least, was wondering where you were? I was thinking the same thing on the TV...no drive, no place to store the virus, but who knows. If you don't, I know it's not well known.mojobone wrote:I'm not so certain about viruses and smart TVs; it probably depends on the operating system, but if there's no drive for a virus to reside on, I should think it would limit your exposure to at least some types of trojans and worms. I agree on the Norton, that's why I moved to Avast (pay version). It messes with just one of my plugins when it's inserted, but you can turn Avast off quick with the silent/gaming mode. It updates 2-3 times a day sometimes, and has, knock wood like you say, kept me clean so far.
One thing's for sure....if the TVs can't get viruses, some creep is working it out now to see if they can!
Thanks for the post Mojo
