Solo cocktail jazz piano instrumental - puzzled by review and hoping for feedback

Post by ecurb » Sun Apr 09, 2017 2:45 am

Hi guys,

I'm pretty much new here - joined TAXI at the end of January, and have been happily submitting to various instrumental listings since, soaking up the feedback and even getting a couple of forwards (yippee!)

I'm posting this because it's the first return review I've had that I've really been puzzled by, and I'd love to get some further feedback to help me decide whether I should be scrapping the track for this type of listing, or changing something specific in it, or just reposting it as-is and hoping for more sympathetic ears next time around.

The listing was as follows:
NEW LISTING -- SOLO COCKTAIL JAZZ PIANO INSTRUMENTAL CUES are needed by a NON-Exclusive Music Library that loves what they've been getting from TAXI Members. They're eagerly looking for Down-to-Mid-Tempo Piano Cues in a variety of moods that would work well in lounge, bar, and restaurant scenes in TV Shows and Films. Please listen to the following references to get an idea of the general style and vibe they're looking for:

Desperate Housewives https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZcT3ZA7o4Nw

"Here's That Rainy Day" by Dorothy Donegan https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Mmqu9PNerSU

"Round Lights" by Thelonious Monk https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UIspU_KrB10

Please send them well-played original, Instrumental Cues that can range from sophisticated to elegant, to light-hearted, to bluesy, to romantic – just imagine the range of moods that might work for scenes in an upscale lounge, fine dining restaurant, or maybe even a smoky, day-drinkers’ bar. Stick to one mood from top to bottom in each piece you submit. Anything that sounds too stiff, over-quantized, or obviously MIDI-driven won’t work for this pitch. Your performance needs to be organic and natural sounding. Be careful not to give them anything that’s overly complex or busy as it might distract from a scene’s dialogue. Yep, we know that the Monk piece above breaks that rule a bit, but we really like Monk! Don’t go as outside as he does ;-)

Your submissions should be about 2 minutes long (give or take), with Non-Faded/ Buttoned endings. Please Do NOT copy or rip off the referenced bands or songs in any way, shape, or form. Use them only as a general guide for tempo, tone, and overall vibe. Broadcast Quality is needed (great sounding home recordings are fine).

This Library offers a NON-EXCLUSIVE, 50/50 Deal. You’ll get 50% of any applicable sync fees and 100% of the Writer’s share. The Publisher will get 50% of applicable sync fees and 100% of the Publisher’s Share on the version they pitch. You’ll keep 100% of the original copyright and master recording. You must own or control the Master and Copyright to submit to this pitch. Please submit one to three Instrumental Cues online or per CD. All submissions will be screened on a Yes/No basis - No full critiques. Submissions must be received no later than 11:59PM (PST), on Friday, March 3rd, 2017.TAXI #Y170303JP

My submission that I'd like feedback on is at

https://soundcloud.com/ecurb67/lucky-its-saturday

... and the feedback I received was simply: Needs more forward momentum.

Any and all thoughts greatly appreciated! I don't want to detail right now just why this puzzles me, as I'd sooner get clean slate responses if that makes sense.

Thanks very much for your time,
Bruce.

Hmm, puzzled too. Listing never states that either, but says not to distract from dialog. If it did, then I can see how it doesn't really vary a whole lot throughout the piece. Nice playing, BTW!

Hi Bruce,

Perhaps the screener felt it was too rubato-- not enough forward motion due to the absence of meter. That said, it's a beautiful piece, and delicately played. I could easily see this used somewhere, so I'd leave it as is and resubmit it to another listing.

Nice,
Niall

My return said "Needs forward momentum and melodic unity."

Sometimes it just happens that way. Keep it for later!

Thanks very much for the feedback (and kind words!) guys, much appreciated!

Back to the shelf she goes then - and I can move on in peace :)

Here's my take, Bruce.
I like the piece, but it starts and stops a lot.
A lot of breaks in momentum.
Maybe that's what the screener meant.

Its a beautiful piece, and very expressively played.

I agree, the number of stops deflates the energy a bit.

You could almost dub in a few of those tinkly cocktail jazz runs and call it a day...

Nice Piece, and played well..
I agree with the comment of a lot of stops and starts.... which I get as part of creating the mood.
Perhaps some gentle little fills in the spaces. It will keep the piece moving along.

Well done!
Bob
