Somebody To Love (Muzak Version)

Post by MrKaplan » Thu Jul 20, 2017 7:26 pm

Hi Everyone,

I would love any feedback on the Muzak cover I just submitted for "Somebody To Love" by Jefferson Airplane. I've never done a "Muzak" style song before, but it was fun to use a Rhodes to get that Muzak feel. It was good to get out of my comfort zone. I hope everyone is doing well.

I have never attempted Muzak, and truthfully am not too familiar with it, but FWIW I like your track! It definitely has that somewhat cheesy element. I guess the only thing I would maybe have added is a bit more harmony rather than just the melody and bass, but maybe that's the point of Muzak? Again I'm not too familiar with it so just my .02

It's not Muzak to my ears, lol! :P

What I remembered of Muzak, is that they took a pop song and played it in the style of smooth jazz. Maybe that's why it sort of sounded absurdly cheesy. Maybe that's why smooth jazz sort of disappeared also?? I think Muzak might have been more prevalent in the '70's. I don't ever remember the production being cheesy, in fact it was probably first rate and performed by professionals. But as a teen, I'm sure I just wasn't into Elton John being covered by Lawrence Welk or the Boston Pops, lol!

I found this. The song is "It Never Rains in Southern California" by Albert Hammond.

"Song Sung Blue" by Neil Diamond. Ok, some songs are Big Band style and not smooth jazz, lol

Those are great examples! I think Muzak is a combo between cheese, big band, and smoooooooth jazz!

Hey, Jason - Hi.
When I saw the title, I was hoping you were referring to the iconic/anthem Hippy Hit of the Flower Power generation days. :? :)
Love the Rhodes, and - as I commented on your SC page - just the right amount of 'cheese' to be perfect elevator musak.
Very well done, IMHO/Old-Guy ears. :)
(okay - now I'll go read the other comments... are they with me, or against me?! :? 8-) )

Sounds great! I just joined Taxi, and was excited when I saw this listing because it would have been perfect for my first submission. Unfortunately, I'm in the middle of moving, and I couldn't get around to starting it until last night. By the time I got these scratch tracks recorded, it was one minute past the deadline :(

It was far from done, but was getting groovy. Sure wish I'd gotten around to it sooner.
Lesson learned, I guess. Good luck!
