Song Length Advice?

Post by boyatheart » Wed Dec 31, 2008 9:54 pm

Hi,I received a Dispatch listing that states a song length of 2 to 4 minutes. I have a track which I know would be exactly right for this listing, except for the length. It's over 5 minutes, but doesn't really work if edited down. I have made many attempts. In people's experience is it likely to be a wasted submission if I submit this track or is this likely to be overlookeds if the music is spot on stylisticaly etc...Maybe this is a crazy question, but deadline is tomorrow. I may just send it anyway because I do believe in this song anyway. Thanks

If the listing party specified 2 to 4 minutes, it's likely that a song that's over 5 minutes is not going to be "on target for this listing" because of the length. Then again, it's $5 to submit and it can't hurt.Claire

Thanks Clare. I did submit the song. I was thinking exactly along the same lines as you.

If it says "recommended length" you'll be alright. I'd give it a go.

Yes Hummingbird. Looking at the listing it is a recommendation and it says 1 - 4 minutes. It seems as though it is also a company looking for music to add to it's library too rather than a specific track for a specific use, which I would view as being more strict about the length.

If you don't the tempo being faster you can always speed it up with software like Audacity (free), which will also shorten it. You're talking a 20% increase in speed here, which is pretty huge... more than I've ever tried. Also, if it's a broadcast-ready listing you'll lose a bit of audio quality. It works fine for song demos that are going to be re-recorded, but it probably wouldn't work for something that has to be broadcast quality.Cam

Artistic fade-out?
