Spotify and Staying Current

Post by Casey H » Sat Aug 07, 2021 8:42 am

One thing I read about a lot here is people having trouble writing songs that sound contemporary. Trust me, I'm an old fart (66 going on 67) and struggle a lot too. Instinctively my chords and melodies come out like songs from yesteryear. I've been lucky to find collaborators who have helped me make my songs sound more modern. This also is very relevant to lyric writing as well. Lately I've focused more on lyrics, leaving the contemporary music part up to my co-writers.

Bottom line is if you don't listen to any contemporary songs, you won't get there. Listen, look up the lyrics (they are always out there on the web), and take note.

One good way to do this is use Spotify. When I'm in the car, I put on their playlists like "Cool New Indie", "Today's Singer-Songwriters", "Daily Mix", etc. When I get home I make note of the songs I found interesting. (Or I voice dictate to Siri to make a note while driving. Hands free!). Often I look up the lyrics and copy/paste them into my own word docs.

Spotify (or similar service) is a must! :D
