Re: Taxi Country Cuts ?
Aub, obviously we all know we have to write the best songs possible. My question was whether or not Taxi should forward songs that are as good as we hear on albums, even if they're not necessarily something your going to hear in the Top 40? We all know there's not as much money in album cuts for songwriters these days, but they do still make albums last time I checked. And if you think all the songs sound like the #1 hits that got played at the Taxi panel, you're mistaken. My question seemed logical to me, and one I was actually going to ask the panel if I'd had the chance. A few people have responded "no they shouldn't", because Nashville has all the album cuts it needs and that those will probably come from people "in the loop" in Nashville anyway. That makes sense to me. Answers the question in my mind, which is really all you needed to do.How such a question was insulting to ML or flogging a dead horse is beyond me.

Cam, Cam, Cam...there is a rule in this forum: WHAT YOU ACTUALLY POSTED IS NOT RELEVANT!!!! Trust me...nothing good comes from pointing to facts...perception is reality. Just sayin'. (A wise forum member pointed this out to me... )

It's also about timing, that doesn't happen, your sunk and so is your song. We've all heard pretty good songs thru the years that have gone nowhere for one reason of another. And getting a #1 hit is almost accidental and fate at the same time? Make that any Top10 hit. Listening public can be fickle. My good friends in TV have always told me, "if people really knew how to create a hit show, everyone would be doing it." Same could be said in music, no?I wonder, anyone knows of a song that was really good, went in limbo for a number of years, maybe some interest, no takers, only to surface later as a huge hit?

Achy Breaky Heart was one. From Wikipedia:"Originally titled "Don't Tell My Heart," it was recorded by the The Marcy Brothers [1988-1991] on their self-titled second album but was not released as a single. The name was later changed to "Achy Breaky Heart" and was recorded by Billy Ray Cyrus on his 1992 CD "Some Gave All"Oh I'm sorry, you asked for a song that was really good...

Re: Taxi Country Cuts ?
Songs get held up, nothing new there. For years sometimes. I believe several famous artists, once they had enough money and clout, dragged those songs out and did something with them. I think that had more ta do with makin' a point than that the song was that great.I guess my question here is, and forgive me for the ignorance since I didn't go to Nashville: Of the songs they played, what was it that made it a hit, do you think? Identifying those factors is pretty important. Did they take the tunes apart and tell you why they were hits? Did they saly why Cam's or Chit's songs weren't hit material? I heard chits' lyrics weren't conversational enough. I read that some of the audience (or participants, whatever) thought a couple of the songs played were not that great but the panel said "this one could go places." Is that correct? And if so, what did those songs have that all y'all's didn't?

The story about how Bobby Braddock's "He Stopped Loving Her Today" got passed around is pretty interesting. I don't know the time frame, but I've read that many (including George himself) thought it had little value. It ended up being CMA Song of the Year two years in a row (and my personal all-time favorite song).Derek

You may now pelt me with rotten fruit.
