That’s Not Who I Am Anymore ©2014 Robert George BMI
Midnight was a silver shroud of fog
I could hear the barking of my dog
And outside I saw a man I once cared for
As I stepped out slowly in the dark
He said, “I know I betrayed your heart
But that’s not who I am anymore”
He said, “You’re surprised to see me now
O but in the strangest way somehow
Your forgiveness means more that it did before
Looking through a tear-stained veil of time
You have seen the fault was always mine
But that’s not who I am anymore
This past Sunday when you came to say goodbye
I looked up and saw you kneel and cry
So I’ll tell you things about my smashed-up Ford
Not found in that deputy’s report
There was wine beside me on the seat
And no skid-marks on that lonely street
Where my mustang hit that big old sycamore
As I’m borne away on midnight winds
Please forgive me for my foolish sins
Cos that’s not who I am anymore”
O was it him or something that I dreamt
Either way I know what his words meant
On the night we meet the Holy Ghost
It’s forgiveness that we need the most
As I stepped out slowly in the dark
He said, “I know I betrayed your heart
But that’s not who I am anymore
That’s not who I am anymore…”
