The Free Music Archive

Post by Ajetpackoperation » Thu Apr 15, 2010 9:25 pm

Has anyone checked out or has music featured on the Free Music Archive (http://freemusicarchive.org/)? I've discovered some really phenomenal stuff on there. Prolly the best thing since UbuWeb. I'd like to get some of my music on there (my entire catelog if possible) and get some radioplay on WFMU. That would be teh awesumz.

Hmmm, I think you might get flamed  Most folks on this forum are in favor of being paid! :)

Odd. A large portion of the music I buy is from artist that I've discovered from the free music archive - either from surfing the site or from hearing it played on WFMU (my favorite radio station!). Is the word free that scary? Does it logically follow that if music is offered for free that people would even want it? I say it doesn't. I also say that free could be a potentially huge gateway to career success.

Ok, this is a prank, right? If "a large portion of the music you buy is from this site", I dread the day you post a song of your own composition on peer ro peer. not only for you, but for me, if I make the mistake of listening.
you say that 'free' could be a potentially huge gatway to career success". I have to agree with "potentially".
(yours is a prank post, right?)
Actually went to the site. Listened to a cut from the "Vonn Krapp Family". (and for the regular readers of these forums, I'm not making this up). The tune never got to any lyrics -- but the family portrait is to die for.
Well, I'm glad you enjoy downloading the "Vonn Krapps". Won't be joining you soon.
(this was a prank, right?)

there is a vonn krapp family. a bluegrass/goth band. "Loco 1" sounded like a tornado, and "Loco2" sounded like a tornado with some chickens and a toilet flushing. I listened on the feature or highlight page a song by Rob Steady- "Scratching while", and I won't say what it sounded like he was scratching. If this isn't a joke, I don't think I'd ever listen to anything again on the site unless someone had a particular song they thought was really good. I wasn't even listening under the comedy headings. The few things I heard at random, except for the vonn krapp family, lol, didn't sound as if the posters thought their stuff was worth anything, which seems a little unusual.
On the other hand you might have the best and most popular songs on the site, but it would sure be humiliating to come in second to the vonn krapp family, might be a risky strategy.

Generally, the use of Lolcatspeak (teh awesumz) indicates that someone is pulling your leg, just as the tagline 'true story' usually indicates the opposite. It's a peculiar form of internet humor.

Seriously?!? Are you gonna ma..- Nevermind. So with just a cursory perusal of the FMA you were able to build a logical framework upon which affixed my taste in music and how the music affects my own output and determined that my music sucks. Congradulations! You and your cyber-brain have fun trippin' the light fantastic at the Large Hadron Collider - on a Sunday.

The Vonn Krapps rock @ss and you know it!

A word about avant-garde/experimental/free improv/EAI/noise/drone/concrète/contemprary classical since we're now on the subject. I find that this stuff is a great resource for opening up to new concepts and practices in the art of making music - kinda like a big ol' R&D facility of the best and brightest. I wish I had Lachenmann and Yoshihide on speed-dial....

The prank already happened. Somewhere between the 808 the snare the wall of laptop glitch, and the Joan Manuel Serrat sample.
