The Sahara's My Home Tonight

Post by br1 » Tue Aug 19, 2008 12:03 am

Hush now, closely listenSundown approaches nowCan you hear them in the distanceThe elephants calling outCalls of mating conquer lonelinessCalls for aid when they're in needCalls of triumph as their trunks caressAlways there to keep the other freeIf I was to capture any momentWith you at any timeI'd seize all of the sentimentsThis place paints in my mindTheir undying loyaltyTrumpets sounding in the burning skyWith you, right hereThe sahara's my home tonightThe sahara's my home tonightA lush green surrounds usScent of olive in the airCan you see it in the distanceThe river streams away our caresStreams away responsibilityStreams away all sense of timeStreams away all other voices as weLeave society behindIf I was to capture any momentWith you at any timeI'd seize all of the sentimentsThis place paints in my mindA neverending beautyAs fiery skies sink into the NileWith you, right hereThe sahara's my home tonightThe sahara's my home tonightLooks like Adam and Eve got a second chanceGet to live in paradise againThis time there won't be any apples or snakesIn our little garden of EdenIf I was to capture any momentWith you at any timeI'd seize all of the sentimentsThis place paints in my mindI'd swear undying loyaltyAs trumpets sound in the burning skiesWith you, right hereThe sahara's my home tonightThe sahara's my home tonightThe sahara's my home tonight

Hey Anne, I know how I want it to be sung, but no time to actually do anything with it. Why do you ask?

br1I really like the imagery here - good writing, man.Not being a great interpreter of lyrics, I was curious about your choice of the word 'Sahara' in the hook. The African imagery you use is very intense with animals, sundowns, lush greens, scents, distant rivers etc. Very picturesque. I think of the Sahara as a barren desert as opposed to, say, the Serengeti which is as lush as you describe.Unless of course you using the Sahara in a context that I'm not getting. Which is very possible when it comes to me and lyrics!!Good job - thanks for posting.Liam

very nice imagery...i just have to be honest, though, that mentioning the elephants was very distracting to me...i'm not sure what your target audience is for this, but unless it's some sort of historical society or a group of natural scientists, it might distract people from the rest of the song.

The positive feedback is much appreciated. Thanks.Heya Linziellen, thanks for popping in. An elephant fan eh? Excellent, I think it's the elephants that draws this away from being typical and pulls people in. I might be wrong, but, hey. *laughs*Liam. There's a specific place in the Sahara which fits the atmosphere I've painted. Unfortunately, you're right, the typical image of the Sahara is a barren desert. I've been thinking on changing it to 'savannah'. What do you think?Momof4, thanks for popping in. As I mentioned earlier, I think it's the elephants that makes it different. Sorry, but I doubt I'll take them out. heh. Much appreciated for the input though.Cheers

Hey there, I actually wrote an elephant song a couple of weeks ago, but it's nothing like this. Mine needs a lot more work! I do love Elephants yes To me this lyric is like a painting, I wonder what kind of music you're thinking of? Linzi

If a few people make the same comment there may be something there. So far, I’m the only one who’s asked about the Sahara theme. So it may just be me.You have obviously put a lot of work into this lyric and I wouldn’t want you to change any theme, metaphor or direction based on anything that I, alone, have said. Having said that, I have thought about Sahara vs savannah. Yup, savannah covers all bases and is pretty good except for two things (my 2c):i. I prefer place names. Just my opinion. And African place names can be quite evocative, I feel. Kilimanjaro, Serengeti, Zambezi, Casablanca. There’s a long list. Hell, the word Africa itself is evocative (if not a little overdone) ii. You’ve referenced the Nile river in the lyric and that puts you in northern Africa. I’m not sure that’s savannah country.I wouldn’t change anything about this lyric yet. Not until you’ve had all the feedback you want (from wherever you get it) and you’re really sure of the changes.Best of luck, it’s a good lyric Liam

Very nice lyrics... I was reading this and the suggestions regarding Sahara vs. Savannah and it popped into my head that you could simply say, "This is my home tonight". You've described it well with the mentions of elephants, animals, etc. & that you want to be there with this person so the geographical name might not be needed at all. With you, right hereThis is my home tonightThis is my home tonightIt might even add to the secondary idea (2nd to the location itself) that being with HER is part of what makes it 'home'.What would be your goal for this song? The reason I ask is sometimes by changing a few lines to be less specific and with the right musical mood (maybe world music) you could have a film/TV song. (BTW, I'm guilty as hell of writing specific lyrics that hurt the film/TV chances at times)... So, if you changed the elephant references to something more generic and removed the specific reference to the Nile, you'd have that.I'm not suggesting you re-write the lyrics as above, just throwing out there the possibility of film/TV use, especially if you collaborate with someone who could put it to the right musical track. And... there is nothing wrong with having multiple versions of your lyrics.Nice stuff! Casey
