Thoughts on latest Realstrat v3?

Post by maryshaw » Thu Feb 13, 2014 3:47 pm

Hi All,

Knowing full well that nothing beats a real live guitarist, I'm still gonna ask - is it possible to get "deal-worthy" sounds of a VST like MusicLab's Realstrat?

Thanks for your help!

I have an older version of realstrat. Not real fond of it. There is a fairly new company, ample sound, that I like, I have the Martin acoustic and the les paul. They have several others also. I suppose the review that sold me was this one, where the reviewer had the same taylor guitar (real one) that he reviewed from ample.

Wow, Len.

I checked that out... then bought the three Ample acoustics. (wasn't real impressed with the electrics) Those acoustics are very impressive.

Thanks Len. I watched the Taylor video and agree it's a fantastic acoustic. I listened to some of the electrics but they sounded a bit too "keyboardish" to me. I'll bet that can be mitigated somewhat when they are paired with a good amp setup.

Russell, you may also want to check out the Guild D-40 from Acoustic Samples. It has a very similar interface to the Ample Guitars and also sounds great. You can find it here: http://www.acousticsamples.net/gd6

The les paul really sounds good for a clean sound, I haven't really delved into distortion or amp-speaker effects. I made a cheat sheet, 4 pages, of the keyswitches. There's really no need to try and play it on a keyboard. In the strummer section you can choose up to 12 chords that each have their own keyswitch, C2 to B2, the sequences have their own keyswitch C3-D#4 or 8 sequences, there are plenty of presets or you can make your own. The heart of them imo is the keyswitching, don't forget if you want to use the strummer mode though, is that you first must use the keyswitch C#6 and set the note velocity to 64-127, if the velocity is less than 64 the strummer will be off.

Wow Len, great tip - thanks! I'm new to the whole keyswitch/articulation world so this is very helpful. Making a cheat sheet makes so much sense. I'm going to do that with some of my other plugins and go listen to the Les Paul as you suggest :)

It could be that the Ample Sound electrics were less impressive to me because the demo songs I listened to weren't performed well... or like you said, Mary, it could also be the fx they used (amp and speaker sims) not sounding good enough.

I just checked out the Acoustic Samples demo songs... not bad, but the demos sound pretty midi. the fret slides sound nice, but I'm not hearing any string squeak on the demos.

Len, do you have anything posted where you used the Ample Les Paul?

Yes I have one, but it's a very minor role, so I'll try to do one.

okay, here it is, perhaps a boring song, all instruments are ample les paul, except for the bass and drums. All parts are clean except I put the lead in the middle through revalver amp and speaker simulator and a delay (overdriven). The acoustic guitars don't have an asdr like the electrics? anyway, you have to adjust the adsr to find the sweet spot, so I hope I adjusted it so it don't sound like a keyboard, lol!

Thanks, Len.

It sounds mostly believable. I'll have to see if I can get a demo version from Ample. Maybe I will get the PRS or the Gibson.
