Squids,What really helps though, is knowing for certain that you're ready to quit. Having one foot in, and the other out, kinda' makes it a 50/50 chance of being totally successful. I think Ted was finally ready to totally give it up, as was I, and we were ready & willing to go through the pains of quitting. I was ready to quit in my mind, on January 1, 2008. Just never quite worked out that way. But I knew I was gonna' take a stand sooner or later, and just decide to quit. This thread gave me just the push I needed. So I've gotten through 1 full week without lightin' up, mostly because I was READY (in my mind) to do it. See what I'm sayin'?I-468

I've quit many times in the past and I know I have to be ready to do it. Seeing all y'all get so much support certainly gives me a good feeling but it's not enough. I've got be sure in my mind that this is what I need to do and there's no going back. I know I'll get there. Watchin' all y'all really struggle with it convinces me they never really did stop putting in addictive additives when they said they would. I know a good portion of it is psychological but the symptoms you've all described indicate a physical components as well. I'm jes really proud of you, Ibanez. Of all y'all. It's no mean feat to beat this thing. Something you can be proud of for the rest of your life.

Ibanez,Even though you're unable to SEE me at this moment, I am totally doing my happy dance for you. Your first week!!!!!!! That's fantastic. Monster congratulations. And it's only going to get easier from here. And my sweet cephalopod... You know that the physical aspects of quitting are going to happen, and they aren't going to be easy at the beginning. When you get the heeby-jeebies, just get a hug from one of your kids. They'll love you for it, too. Let them be your support system at home, and we'll pick up the cyber-slack here. K?I already have total faith in you. And I'm willing to wait (a little while ) until you're ready to jump into the fire. And when you take the plunge, we'll be here.Ted

LOL!!! I like the "bionic eyes" idea-- I could use a few of those these days here in my studio, staring at my computer hour upon hour... I love checking in on this thread to hear how all you guys are doing. Keep up the great work!! I'm rooting for all you quitters!!! QUIT QUIT QUIT!!!

Kudos to all those fighting to stop smoking. I can only imagine how hard it must be-- addictions are so powerful.A few years ago, due to a potentially serious condition in my esophagus, my doctor told me I needed to cut my coffee down to 1 cup in the morning and not eat with 2-3 hours of bedtime. You would think this would be easy!! But I love coffee, not just for the caffeine, but for the overall feeling of having that cup next to me at work. (Decaf is no better for this condition)... And, for some reason, I hate going to bed the slightest bit hungry. So, I fell off the wagon quickly, drink coffee in the afternoon and woof down snacks near bedtime. Now, in no way do I put my problem in the same league as smoking addiction which has a highly physical component as well as the emotional part. But I have empathy for people trying to break unhealthy habits. We all often trade short-term comfort needs for long term health benefits.Today I did not drink any coffee. I took caffeine by pill- one in the morning and one after lunch. And I will not eat after dinner. Today is day one.Good luck to all who are trying to break those unhealthy habits!

Way to Go! Never having been a coffee drinker, I guess the "addiction" is the same. That's great of you. Don't hesitate to keep us posted on your progress and your troubles...

I managed to quit caffeine for the very same reasons Casey mentioned. Took three brutal days and some sweating to make it happen. Now I drink decaf by the gallon (that might not be a joke, I don't count how many cups) and it's much easier on my gut.Good luck, Casey, I'm pullin' foi ya!! Caffeine is a mean habit to break.

Hey SquidsInterestingly, it seems it's the acid in coffee, whether decaf or regular, that causes my problem and not really the caffeine. I don't think I'll ever give up caffeine (I'm taking it by pill) but I'm hoping to kick the coffee.I never thought I could feel so sad about something that should not be all that important. But when I think of eating breakfast without coffee or not having that cup next to my computer at work, I almost feel like crying. (I don't cry as easily as Ted, though. )BTW, the doc says one cup in the morning would be OK. But I know my personality. My one cup would be like a smoker's "just one cigarette".Thanks all for the support. Day 2 tomorrow... Casey
