Too bluegrass for swamp?
Ive been doing a few cues for the swamp listing.
SWAMPY INSTRUMENTAL CUES are needed by a New, NON-Exclusive Music Library recently started by the CEO of another successful company. They’re looking for Mid-to-Up-Tempo Instrumental Cues in the general stylistic ballpark of the references below, and other music in that wheelhouse: American Hoggers (1:19 – 1:41) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sXdBieUZ9Ko Duck Dynasty (0:20 – 1:21) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dOpOrPK05to Please give them swampy Instrumental Cues with a real-deal, backwoods vibe that instantly puts you in the mind frame of traveling down the bayou. Arrangements can range from Stripped-Down Solo Guitar, to a fuller ensemble sound with the addition genre-appropriate instrumentation. Be sure to stick with one central melodic motif from beginning to end, while layering instrumentation in and out to create dynamics and forward momentum as your Cue progresses. Be sure to avoid any material that’s stiff, synthetic, or obviously MIDI-driven and quantized. Your submissions should be at least 2 minutes long, give or take. Non-Faded, Button/Stinger endings will work best for this pitch. Do NOT copy the referenced music in any way, shape, or form. Use it only as a general guide for tempo, tone, and overall vibe. Broadcast Quality is needed (great sounding home recordings are fine). This Company offers a NON-Exclusive, 50/50 deal. You’ll get 50% of any applicable sync fees and 100% of the Writer’s share. The Publisher will get 50% of any sync fees and 100% of the Publisher’s share. You must own or control your Master and Composition to submit to this pitch. You’ll maintain full ownership of the original Copyright and Master Recording. Please send as many Instrumentals as you’d like, online or per CD. All submissions will be screened on a Yes/No basis - No full critiques. Submissions must be received no later than 11:59PM (PDT), on Friday, May 18th, 2018. TAXI #Y180518SC

Re: Too bluegrass for swamp?
I know I'm up too late when I start seeing you live Les.
This is such a cool track. It might have just a bit too much boogie compared to the refs, but those refs were boogying more than I generally hear in sawmp.
Hard to tell.
Could you do an ALT with just the guitar and slide at maybe 10 BPM slower?
I think (now on the third listen...I really like this track) it's too busy for background TV. It would make a killer opening song though!!!

As is, I would submit it. Great performance and great mix.
I think you could also make a second cue out of it by stripping back a couple of the parts (how many parts are in there, I can't tell!?)

+1. Its pretty busy. Take the same amount of parts and strip about half of them back so it follows what the brief says:johnlewitt wrote:.....make a second cue out of it by stripping back a couple of the parts (how many parts are in there, I can't tell!?)
You might want to structure your mix so that the main melody parts are in the center, and supporting instrumentation is on the sides if you can. That Dobro part (or maybe acoustic guitar w/ slide) seems like a center figure to me.Be sure to stick with one central melodic motif from beginning to end, while layering instrumentation in and out to create dynamics and forward momentum as your Cue progresses.
Good luck! Nice Picking!

Re: Too bluegrass for swamp?
IMHO - it's plenty swampy, and not too Bluegrass - the slide guitar is what makes the difference; makes it work.
Agreeing with Andy & John - that it's busy; if you have the time & means to offer up a few versions of it, with at least two that are thinned out considerably -
giving some options might improve your batting average...?
The quick pace of this brought to mind the image of zipping through the everglades on one of those air-boats.
Of course - your mileage may vary.
Great, fun track.
Maybe consider a better/more descriptive title for it?

Re: Too bluegrass for swamp?
Thanks one and all. Great advice given and confirming my feelings also. I'll strip it back and re pan those melody instruments.
I just bought this Chinese Gretsch resonator for about $600 US. It's great to have that sound. Don't buy the more expensive model with the pick up. It's totally useless and sounds nothing like a mic placed a foot or two in front of the cone.
Thanks again for the tips.
