But the fourth was so good!DeanT wrote:1. Laurel Mick Ostrander telling us what works for editors. Fantastic.

3. Chuck Henry: Don't overthink.

San Diego - and its near-perfect climate and being our family home makes that decision extremely difficult.annayarbrough wrote:That's a good tip. Where will you be locating from??
Nevertheless, I've already written to immediate family members, and have been contacting people and sources around Nashville.
It's a bit of a scary thing to be doing.

Well, I'm not glad that you miss it... per se - but your enthusiasm for it is encouraging; even for a little Old-Guy.annayarbrough wrote:You'd love Nashville. I used to live there... miss it a ton!

Re: Top 3
first off - it was so nice to meet you at the Rally, Anna! Really enjoyed spending the time with you and Seamus. (hope I'm spelling his name correctly!)
1. Relationships. It was SO great to build relationships and make connections. This is a people business. Relationships are so important, and it's SO great to connect with like minded people who are equally driven and passionate about this craft. It can get lonely haha! I spend all day alone at my day job, then come home and am alone in my studio. Being around so many people like myself was such a blessing.
2. How Video Editors Choose & Use Music. SUCH an amazing panel/class. Learned so much in that one, I'm already implementing a few things in some cues I'm working on.
3. Few points from Mason Cooper from the Music Supe spotting class.
- We are not in the music business, we are in the film/tv business. This isn't the first time I've heard this, but the way he put it, it was like a light bulb went off. It wasn't any new information, but something about it just made lots of things I've learned click, it was an aha moment for sure. Our music is not the star, it plays a supporting role. Just switching your mentality to understand that it's not about the music, but the production that the music supports - I believe that will help to write much more appropriately and effectively.
- Music supes don't want, and don't choose the BEST music. They want the RIGHT music. Again, nothing earth-shattering. However, it was another aha moment. Watching Mason and Laurel work in their classes made it SO clear that they don't give a dang about how great or not great of producers/composers we are. It doesn't matter! It's all about the MOOD. How does your music make someone FEEL? Does it accurately convey ONE mood? Does it SUPPORT the production?
This Rally was definitely life changing. Still processing for sure - but I've already written several cues and I feel like my writing is getting more and more appropriate for licensing. Can't wait to see how far we all go in the next year!!

Same! And yes—you're about the only person who's got that right.markhimley wrote:first off - it was so nice to meet you at the Rally, Anna! Really enjoyed spending the time with you and Seamus. (hope I'm spelling his name correctly!)
I found it was the simple things that really hit home for me, as well. Think I just need those hammered into my skull every so often. About to sit down and (finally!) go through all of my notes! Maybe I'll decide on my own top 3

Re: Top 3
Hi Anna,
it was nice meeting you (and Seamus).
My top 3 take a ways, in no particular order:
1. How a video editor chooses the music for TV, the deciding factors, very interesting. Not quite what I expected-MP3s?!
2. My 1-to-1 with Ronan Chris Murphy on my mixes and production techniques and how I could improve - got some homework lol
3. How to use compression - slam it man! With Ronan.
I missed the screener's session... One I would have loved to have attended... maybe next time.
They were plenty of others just as worthy.
Universal lyrics with Robin
Rob Chiarelli's how to get a great low-end (the last part of his Master Class)...
Oh you said three...
If you ask me tomorrow I may change one or two. lol

Haha, right?!fuzzbox wrote:Not quite what I expected-MP3s?!
Seems to be consensus on the session favourites across the board.
I found Robin's really valuable too—even though I've heard her speak several times. I was still finding new things (and old reminders) to implement.
