Trillian VST Crashing PC?

Post by GavinKMusic » Mon Apr 28, 2014 7:28 am

Hi Guys,

I loaded Trillian bass vst on my windows 7 dell. since then my pc keeps dumping data and blue screening.

Do you think Trillian might be the cause? I've only got 8GB ram right now but I know I probably need more. Also running Kontakt and other VST's.

Thanks for any feedback. I'm thinking maybe I should have got a mac book pro with 16GB ram. my DAW is cubase.

Do you still get the BSOD when you don't load Trillian into your project?

By just googling, it seems that Trillian is a memory hog. My guess is that it probably also causes the cpu to spike and overwhelm the system. There are instances in mac as well.

Here is a video on memory management that spectrasonics puts out.

http://vimeo.com/17379714

Many sample sets use "disk streaming", instead of loading the whole sample patch in memory. It doesn't seem that trillian does.

This is a quote from a 2001 article from Sound on Sound Mag that describes disk streaming, it's quite outdated, but gives you the idea.

"Most samplers, be they built in software or hardware, work by storing sample data in RAM, so that sounds can be instantaneously triggered from a MIDI controller and played in 'real time'. HALion, like Nemesys' Gigasampler, adopts a different approach. Rather than loading active samples into RAM, and thereby limiting the maximum sample length to the amount of free memory available, HALion works by 'streaming' sample data directly from your hard drive whenever it's required.

In this way, the plug-in uses up remarkably little RAM, and the maximum sample length is theoretically only limited by the amount of free space you have on your hard drive. The supplied sound libraries take full advantage of this freedom, offering (for example) extremely detailed Acoustic Piano and Electric Bass multisamples which weigh in at 250 and 370Mb respectively.

In actual fact, however, HALion does not work entirely by hard disk streaming alone. To do so would be impractical, since it would almost inevitably result in an unacceptable delay between a MIDI note-on and the beginning of sample playback. To prevent this from happening, HALion pre-loads a small section from the start of each active sample into RAM, providing a kind of safe 'lead-in' to the streaming process, and ensuring reliable, responsive performance."

per the video, lite version options.

By thinning out the samples from ram that you won't use in your song, you don't need to sacrifice the quality of the samples that you will use.

Hi Russell, Yes unfortunately. but I do have more inserts on each track and also a bunch on the master. maybe this could be the problem.

Hi Len, Thanks. it sounds so technical.

To install Trillian I had to use 5 discs. Must be a large program. I might have to remove it for now until I upgrade my RAM.

My PC only started crashing after I installed Trilian.

Ouch.... hmmm...

I've had plug-ins lock up my DAW and/or really mess with its functionality. But I've never had BSOD from them. You might wanna have some current backups while you are working on this problem.

Also, when I am in the mixing stage and don't really need to worry about real-time latency, I bump my ASIO buffers up significantly to take it easier on the CPU and to keep the audio non-glitchy. mebbe that is worth a try?

um... You know, it's a pretty simple thing just to un-install Trillian and see how your 'puter does too :geek: (heh.. I see you've already thought of this 8-) )

I've used Trillian on both PC and MAC, and it's really stable, like all Spectrasonics software has been for me on both systems. Trillian can be a memory hog, though, on the very realistic electric and acoustic bass patches, so that's most likely what happened. I never use multiple instances of it, but instead use the multi out in the mixer instead. Works like a breeze in Studio One.

might have to uninstall it. for now. its a lovely sounding bass vst. :(

I also have a ton of stuff in my pool. most of which I dont need. I need to probably delete most of these as I only need the tracks I need in there. this might be sucking ram?

looks like I've been letting my pools build up and I have a few project folders with same problem. so removed unused and sent to trash and then deleted trash. It said by emptying trash I would be removing them from hard drive. Maybe this was the problem. Using too much HD?
