when i hear the term 'singer' i think, voice as an instrument. linda ronstadt, aretha franklin, norah jones, alicia keys. so when i said carole king was a 'bad singer', i was using the term relatively. it wasn't malicious.

peace everyone

Heh, it's like suggesting that a Strat is a bad guitar. An instrument is just another medium for what is played. You can play the same notes on a ton of instruments. Some like'm hot, some like'm differently.. it really doesn't matter if Carole King was a bad singer. What matters is that she wrote and sang those songs. How can you not be content with the delivery of the content? Don't shoot the messenger.. her songs are part of the cultural tapestry, a take it or leave it kind of proposition :D

Carole King is an artist. A one of a kind. Nobody questions who is singing as soon as she opens her mouth. To me it's not about good or bad, is more about being authentic and emotion.
We should all aspire to be as bad as Carole King.

Right on Bruce!

There are many artists whose voices and singing are not what one would consider "great singers". They have "characterful" voices that may rub some of us the wrong way. Others will love them and think their voices are a perfect match for their songs.
E.g. I don't think I would want Justin Bieber singing Dire Straits songs...

Her voice certainly touched enough people to sell over 25 million copies of her album, "Tapestry", one of the best selling albums of all time.
