WSJ article -- "...music industry faces pressure to revamp"
Neil Shah's 3/25/17 Wall Street Journal article "Twilight Of The Rock Gods" is a must-read (and is free, no charge).
I don't want to get banned from the forum so I won't post the link, but here is the tag line: "As rock ‘n’ roll loses its founding megastars—and sales juggernauts—the music industry faces pressure to revamp"

There is no rule here against posting links, unless it's to a music library or Taxi competitor or SPAM so I think we're fine here.

Except the article appears to be behind a paywall. Anyway, it does begin to look as though the age of rock'n'roll is just about done, and I'm okay with it; I'm ready for what's next. I do know how to rock, but my roots have always been a lot deeper than Chuck and his children.

Twilight of the rock gods, age of rock and roll is over.
Maybe it's the twilight of capitalism in rock and roll, and the new age of socialized rock and roll, lol!

Well that didn't work either. The way it worked for me was to go the the drudge report Facebook page and click on the article from there. I was able to read it all.

Yeah, I first got it from Drudge. too, and I read the whole thing which was really good and well-researched! But, I haven't been able to read it since...SORRY EVERYONE!I thought that links to copyrighted stuff were prohibited so I didn't want to take a chance. As for "socialism" (someone mentioned here) if everyone wants to work for free, then go for it.RobPeters wrote:Well that didn't work either. My point is that profitability and economics aren't what determines a thing's character, value, or quality. Rock and roll may be over as far as profitability or return on investment, or even growth, but not so far as popularity. It's an important distinction to make. WSJ is concerned about profitability of the industry, if part of that revamping is that musicians and composers work for free, they'd be singing it's praises and the headlines would reflect that.As for "socialism" (someone mentioned here) if everyone wants to work for free, then go for it.
Working for free? Socialism?

I think what everyone seems to agree on is that music is a terrible investment, lol! So if there's any interest remaining it should be on the music, and the business when there's a need.

Funny (true) story:
The organizers Woodstock searched for acts all the way through the Spring of ’69. Their first big break was when Creedence Clearwater Revival agreed to perform for around $10,000. Michael Lang had then decided to cap each performance pay to $15,000. However, Jimi Hendrix was not OK with the amount. Jimi was signed for $26,000. However, other artists found out about Jimi’s pay and complained. Lang told performers it was because Jimi had 2 sets (this wasn’t true). News spread and performers demanded more money shortly before having to perform.
Interesting point of history: both FDR and George Meany (former president of the A.F.L.-C.I.O) warned against public sector unions.

And neither one were Marxists. Unions are bargaining power for negotiations between employees and employers, not really that complicated. Socialism is more dangerous, it's one person one vote, capitalism is one share, one vote. FDR was afraid of a socialist revolution, so he thought maybe unions might be a way to pacify the people. George Meany lasted a long time, probably because he wasn't a threat.Interesting point of history: both FDR and George Meany (former president of the A.F.L.-C.I.O) warned against public sector unions.

The article really just stated information that is already out there.
I don't think the music industry is in danger. Sure, it is much different than it was 20 years ago, but change happens.
The current stars will be replaced by newer stars and newer ways to make money.
Nothing to panic about at all.
