"The band famously defied Ed Sullivan's request that they not sing the lyric "higher" when they performed "Light My Fire" on his show in 1969. A show producer approached them in the dressing room shortly before they were to perform, Manzarek recalled in an interview with CNN in 2002.

Manzarek remembers the band publicly agreeing like choirboys.

" 'Yes, sir,' we told him," he recalls. "'Whatever you say, sir. We'll change.' (The producer) looked at Jim and said, 'You're the poet. Think of something else -- 'wire,' 'flyer.' "

Then the Doors went out and did the song exactly as they always did. Sullivan was so furious he didn't even shake their hands"

On the day Ray Manzarek left this world, I was thinking - for the very first time in years - about how odd the Doors' keyboards sound by today's standards. When I heard about is passing several days later, the coincidence made me shiver!

It has been written: "Manzarek met drummer John Densmore and guitarist Robby Krieger at a Transcendental Meditation lecture. Densmore says, 'There wouldn't be any Doors without Maharishi'." Hmmm.... I've been a lecturer and teacher for Maharishi since '76 ---- maybe all that meditation is finally paying off!

Just don't ask me for stock market tips..... my ESP isn't that good..... yet!

Ray was a product of a tumultuous time...I'm a tad young to appreciate all Ray did, but I remember thinking how odd his playing was. He's no Emerson, I said to my twelve year old self.. And as odd as I found his playing, I can only imagine how completely outside the box it must have seemed, to those old enough to discern. Since then I've imbibed enough to know his inspiration. A product of his time... A necessary step in getting us to where we are. But more than that, he sure knew how to widen that generation gap.

I digress but we could use more of that... But then I guess it wouldn't be received by the young straights today. Music that was so blatantly counter culture was readily golluped up. Today its all so safe. I do mean ALL, too. He was a raptor. Warrior. Anarchist. We're pigeons.. least I am...and from what ive heard of alternate/indie, I'm not alone.

(Upon reading this I think I'll stick with writing music....lol)
