Yeah - that looks like the article to which Rick was referring in his YouTube video.

The statistics are concerning, but I don't agree with most of the conclusions drawn by either Rick or the Article's author.

For example, new music (less than 18 months since release) is swamped by music in the last 180 months tenfold - and that's just the last 15 years! To go back 60 years (easily in the pop/rock world) that's a 40-fold increase in the number of potential music hits. So duh! for the chances of streaming something a listener likes, even someone who randomly listens to new and old pop hits.

And of course, Springsteen's catalog goes for more bucks than, say, Imagine Dragons or Billie Eilish could get. Simply more content to be had.

The idea is good, the arguments are flawed... just my $550M

And I think that was the whole takeaway... ready for it? ....

Music has evolved ever since early man beat two sticks together in a cave and thought it might sound cooler if he went further in to get more reverb.

The way we consume music has changed massively due to the internet. It's not that old music is better. It's not. Great and terrible music exists in all eras.

What's changed is the way we discover it. In the old days everything was shoved through a very narrow funnel, with very few national radio & TV channels. Basically we were all exposed to pretty much the same material at the same point in time because it was essentially force fed to us.

Now we can listen to anything, anytime , by anyone. Instantly. We don't have to wait around for it to play on the radio, or go the record shop to buy it. We have far more choice.

Of course older music is going to be more popular..there's a lot more of it ! 60+ years worth you could argue. And the kids are listening to all sorts because they have infinite choice now due to the way the system works.
