Being an Alabamian, I'm just heartbroken about what's happening in the Gulf. I don't have it as bad as Squiddy who lives on the Mississippi coast of course, but it still upsets me a lot. I frequently visit the coast, and I worry about the wildlife and all the people on the coast. This You Tube video really got to me....there's a lot of truth in it:

BP gas stations here in Miami are empty. People are not going there.

I am pissed and heartbroken as well. This is a terrible disaster. I sure hope the hurricane season goes easy on us this year. Hurricanes & oil spills surely don't mix.

Indeed it's a tragedy and certainly a lot of finger pointing going on. Unfortunately it could have been any one of the companies who had a deep well platform. What's amazing is no one had a plan or solution, not even the government who prides itself on regulation and
over-regulation. Maybe they should have drilled closer to shore in the shallower water, but that would have been an eyesore. The boycotting of BP is only going to hurt the people who happen to have a BP franchise, if there are any. Because there are only a few refineries,(more government regulation, and I don't want one in my backyard), I am sure the BP refineries are supplying most brands around their perimeter.
I empathize with the couple on youtube. I felt the same way when diesel surpassed the price of unleaded, and the freight rates plummeted, government regulations on the refinement of diesel just kept adding to the price and cancelling out any supply and demand price benefits. After the cold war ended, they didn't need as many big bombs, so I lost a job there also. In fact I am sure many if not most Americans could empathize with them, farmers, mill workers, miners, there was even a time not too many years ago when oil was depressed and oil workers were out of jobs. Not even government jobs are safe around here., a lot of teachers will be getting pink slips.

It could have been anyone of the companies, but out of all of the companies out there, it turned out to be the one with the biggest record of safety infractions. And to not have a real backup plan before going that deep should be criminal. Boycotting them might hurt some mom and pop's, but not boycotting them sends a message that they can get away with this. And it sends that message to every company involved in drilling.

But tanking BP, if that's even possible, sends a real strong message to everyone involved in this sort of stuff. That your company could go belly up if you act irresponsibly. They all need to be furiously reviewing what they are doing and getting prepared for the worst. And these people won't do that, unless they have to, or are scared into it by losing money.
