Your TOP-10 Favorite Films!

Post by ernstinen » Fri Sep 24, 2010 2:25 pm

Hey Guys,

I know we've done this before, but I think film and music go together like peanut butter and bread!

Sooo --- What are your Top-10 movies of all time? Additional comments to explain why? I'm not really talking about soundtracks, just the artistic qualities of the film that may inspire your emotions to create music --- or NOT! Something you could watch over and over --- And maybe a couple "Guilty Pleasures!"

Here's my list:

1. 2001: A Space Odyssey (1968) --- Kubrick was a genius, and love the Ligeti.
2. The Wizard Of Oz (1939) --- Ulitmate musical fantasy.
3. The Godfather, Part 2 (1974) --- Add Part 1.
4. Casablanca (1943) --- 'Nuff said.
5. Pulp Fiction (1994) --- Tarantino at his best.
6. Vertigo (1958) --- Big Hitchcock fan.
7. Chinatown (1974) --- Jack Nicholson's tour de force.
8. Fargo (1996) --- I could nominate all Coen Bros. films.
9. Rear Window (1954) --- See above about Hitchcock.
10. Brokeback Mountain (2006) --- Sensitively challenges stereotypes.

"Guilty Pleasures" : Tie --- "There's Something About Mary" (1998) and "Caddyshack" (1980).

Vote now, and vote often!

In no particular order:

The Chronicles of Riddick (2004)--- I wanna be Vin Diesel ("how do I get eyes like that?")
Ghost (1990) -- this is a guilty pleasure because of the guilt I feel from using this movie to get pleasure from my wife afterward
Star Wars (1977) -- I gotta have a reason?
The Hunt for Red October (1990) --- This movie was better than the book.
Artificial Intelligence: AI (2001) --- This one really hits me hard. Gotta have a box of tissues hidden nearby.
Stripes (1981) --- the first time I ever saw tits in a movie... the first time is the best time.
Wild Orchid (1989) --- Proves even sleezballs can be sensual... what an inspiration. (excellent music too)
Batman The Dark Knight (2008) -- THIS joker is one of the best written and acted villains EVER.
Die Hard (any) --- Ok maybe i wanna be Bruce Willis

but my #1 favorite of all time....

INXS Live Baby Live (1991) -- I've been using this Concert Video as my inspiration and mojo before heading off to do my live gigs for almost 20 years... Something about it just gets me ready.

no particular order-

Midnight Cowboy
Pulp Fiction
Willie Dynamite
Slaughterhouse Five
Cold Dog Soup
The Big Labowski
Red Rock West
Blood Simple
Night Of The Living Dead

But #1 is The Last Waltz. The Band never sounded better & the performers were all "in the zone".
This one is killer http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7zMOOTVvpT4

Russell, how could I forget Star Wars!? Doh! I saw that after I ate a "walnut chocolate brownie" and the place was so packed that we sat in the 2nd row (and I'm nearsighted). Afterwards, I had no idea what the plot was or anything, but it sure was fun to watch!

More recent films: No Country For Old Men; The Departed etc. It may take some time for those to "sink in" on repeated views.

Bill, you mentioned "The Big Lebowski." Good one, but I prefer "Barton Fink" on the Coen bizarre meter!

Keep 'em comin'!!

Good Ones, y'all! "Space Balls," huh!? Makes me wanna add "Young Frankenstein" --- Mel Brooks' best, IMHO!
Also:

The Usual Suspects (1995) --- Very underrated. Kevin Spacey is brilliant.
Memento (2000) --- A real mindbender.
The Big Sleep (1946) --- Bogart's best film noir.
Animal House (1978) --- One of the funniest movies ever.

Oops, I'm closing in to a TOP-20!

... I wanna play.....

Top 10 in no particular order...
...with explanations ;-)

"Bubba Ho-tep" (utterly stupid can be fun)

"Coffee and Cigarettes" (Tom Waits... need I say more)

"Enemy of the state" (hello...no explanation necessary)

"The Boat that Rocked' (the music nostalgia thing)

"Sweet November" (...not really...j/k)

"Memento" (just plain brill)

"White Christmas" (songs/sentiment)

"High Fidelity" (top 5 lists = cool... plus Cusak and Black... yeah, I thought so...)

"A Few Good Men" (simply for the Cruise/Nicklson trial exchange)

"Tom Doud and the Language of Music" (dunno if it qualifies as a movie - don't care - it's/he's brill)
