B,Trust me, that era produced musicians/singers/songwriters that had nothin' but mad skills! Little on the older side of things, but very effective music during that period, and is still quite effective during this period. Music that never dies.I-468

My Mom was a Nat King Cole nut. I grew up with that voice in the air. When I got into to jazz, I discovered his piano playing. Frankly, I think he is under rated as a player. If you listen to the early Diana Krall recordings, you can hear how much she listened and borrowed from Cole and the arrangements he played. I love the sense of playfulness in the lyrics back then. Tunes with lines like..."I gotta way with women, but someone gotta way with mine..." or ..."I'm an errand boy for rhythm, send me...", what great stuff! Somehow, the music from that era just feels positive, even when it describes how someone is stealing your girl! A lot of it is variations of rhythm changes and blues in major keys, which probably explains why the sound is more uplifting. Mewman

Mewman, you're spot on... They could have been singing about the end of the world and you'd still be tapping your foot saying "man that song gives me good vibes"... I love how (from the tracks I was listening to) there sounds like hardly any guitar etc, sounds like drums/bass/strings/harp and piano, and the strings are forever changing, it's excellence at it's best...To be honest, I really wish I had the skill to write songs like that, they may not be what we term commercial nowadays, but hell, they make you feel good, they sound good, they got people to dance (WHAT IS THAT????) ....

I love Nat King Cole. And I think he was underrated as a piano player too but I can see how that happened.....it's hard to get beyond his voice.I remember one time someone asked him if he'd ever quit smoking and he said if he did, his career would be over. I think that was the year before he passed away from lung CA. It's sad that, in a way, there was this sort of collusion to keep him smoking and that he participated in to make a living. And whoever arranged his strings was a genius. Gorgeous, gorgeous.
