What's in Nashville?

I have to take a road trip in a couple of weeks to return a borrowed grandchild, and my wife and I may be in Nashville for a day (weekend). I've never been there. Is there any one thing that I absolutely have to do-see-hear while I'm there? That's cheap?

If you belong to ASCAP, you can call ahead to make an appointment with a rep. They have lots of great career info. I've only been to Nashville once, but if I go back, I'd go to clubs to hear songwriter performances, sign up for open mics and visit some studios. Let us know how it goes in Music City.

Thanks Nomi, and relay. I won't know until the last minute whether or not we go there, so any info helps me wing it!

Regardless of what instrument you play, Gruhn guitars is a fun place to check out. They'vegot tons of beautiful instruments! Also, if you're into "brushes with greatness", about half of thetimes I've been to Gruhn's, I've seen/met musicians of note (e.g. John Mayer, Jamie Cullum). You should also swing by the Pancake Pantry. Good eats!!Steve

Thanks, guys. I have a CD of Townes Van Zant, Steve Earle, and Guy Clark Live at the Bluebird, and I think that's a great place just because of that. Ooh! and a candy, I mean, guitar store! Cool. Thanks again.Ed

Made it to N-ville and back. Couldn't get into the Bluebird, but we saw John Langford and Paul Burch at the Basement--good show. I haven't been to a club in years, and I don't drink much anymore, so the late hour was frustrating, but worth it.Music Row was empty, Gruhn's was cool. They let me play a Guild 12-string for a few minutes, because I couldn't explain to my wife what it sounded like. I may write a song--"The Only Panama Hat In Nashville". The Mrs. says I should do a whole CD of songs about places where I just don't fit in.... Thanks for the ideas. Ed

Quote: I may write a song--"The Only Panama Hat In Nashville". That's funny and a very good concept.

Thanks, Dave. If, on Sat. afternoon my wife and I gotten separated, she could have asked one of the shills on Broadway where the old guy in the Panama was, and she'd a' found me!
