Zoinks!!!Sorry to hear that.My dad did the same thing (not in a cheesegrater) a few years ago. It took about 8 months or so for him to get playing again. He had to adjust his technique a little (obviously) but it didn't slow him down in the long run.Hope you heal quickly.Z

Wow! I produced an album for a great songwriter awhile back who did something similar. His reaction was to turn his guitar around, and learn to play left handed! Kinda like Hendrix.Ern

Thanks everyone for the kind words.Zink, it wasn't a cheese grater. I was cutting parmesan with a super sharp knife. One of those knives that can "cut through cardboard like butter".....well they can add to the instructions that it cuts through skin like a ripe tomato. My finger tip was hanging off so I popped it back on, wrapped it up and hopefully it's healling now. I don't have much feeling in the tip. I think I cut through the nerves. Oh well, at least it doesn't hurt.Ernstein, I tried the left hand technique....It felt really alien to me. Like smoking a pipe from the nose. I'm sticking with slide for now and learning to play minus the index finger.I remember reading that Django Reinhart burnt his hand really badly and had reduced movement in his right hand ao he taught himself a completely different plucking and strumming technique to compensate for the fact he couldnt finger pick anymore.....didn't do him any harm.

I was young, 23 maybe, and laying some cheap carpet in our apartment trying to get it just right, trimming it with a plain old razor blade. Almost cut off the end of my left thumb as a result. I had no feeling in it for several years. It went across the meat portion opposite the nail side all the way across and down to the nail on the other side. It was literally just hanging there by a small piece of meat and bleeding to beat the band. I wrapped it up and it grew back but it took a long time to get used to the new sensations, or lack of I should say. I have a big old scar to this day.Obviously I have been extremely careful with sharp instruments since then and no more trimming carpet without the poroper tools and gloves. Good luck.

Owwwwwww.I remember a friend of mine having an argument with his older brother. His brother, in a fit of rage, slammed the door shut in his face...and on his finger. Snapped the bugger in two. My friend rushed off to the hospital and they told him there was nothing much they could do and he'd probably have reduced movement for the rest of his life. He told them he was a guitarist by trade and amazingly they did everything they could to sort out his finger. Now he's got full movement. The morale of this tale.....when you do something horrible to your hands, tell the hospital your a musician
