How much should I charge?

A friend of mine is in the media business. He has heard some of my music and has expressed interest in having me write some pieces that he could use when working with his clients. I would be writing new pieces based on his needs (style, tempo, instruments…)
Since I have not done anything like this before, I don’t know how much should I charge for something like this? How much per piece?
Any ideas?

Kinda depends on where it is going.

The short answer is as much as you can without losing the deal. For web only, that will be gas money but for a national spot that will be rent/mortgage money. Also depends if it is 7 seconds or 3 minutes. Lots of variables.

Just ask them what the budget is and where it will be aired. Then, come back and ask again. :)

I'd also ask your friend if you think it's appropriate, as I'm sure he will be giving your price plus a commission to the end client. He might be able to give you a straight answer, and I'm sure it will vary depending on the client (as per what Mike said above).
