Broadcast Networks not licensed by ASCAP

Post by thedistrict » Mon Jun 17, 2013 11:05 am

Hi All!

Just joined Taxi an hour ago! :)

I have a question regarding the broadcast networks not licensed by ASCAP. I recently signed an exclusive music deal with a new tv show coming to Ion. We're doing 167 tracks for one season and 225 for the second. Super excited about the potential here!

My question - Are we subject to local tv royalty rates because they're not directly licensed by BMI/ASCAP? If so, how exactly does that work? I know Ion is a pretty nice sized network with 200+ local affiliates and 60 O&O stations, but is their potential to land a few nice royalty checks?

A google search "Ion network ASCAP" and the same with BMI inserted shows:

It appears that Ion is mentioned in ASCAP's blurb here: http://www.ascap.com/members/payment/whocollect.aspx

BMI says that Ion is covered through their local television licenses: http://www.bmi.com/creators/royalty/us_ ... ties/basic

It appears that you will get some backend. Be prepared to wait a year or more for checks.

Congrats!!
