Which genres for CD as marketing tool?

Post by rdance » Mon Jul 29, 2013 4:00 pm

Was thinking about putting out a CD (it's been a few years), of a dozen or so instrumentals, to highlight that aspect of my writing. If I sell a few on CD Baby that's great, but main purpose is to have a proper CD with liner notes, graphics, etc., on hand (versus a 'demo CD'), when meeting with film/TV industry folks.

I mainly write guitar-based funk/southern soul/groove instrumentals, and am trying to expand into post rock and lounge/chill genres. For this CD I'm thinking of going full throttle into branding myself as a go-to-guy for just the funk/southern soul/groove, and not include any post rock or lounge/chill on it. (However, I have had a few post rock/lounge/chill forwards).

Do you think it would it be better go full throttle into a single brand, or should I show variety by including tracks from post rock/lounge/chill? I've kind of over-thunk at this point it  and need some fresh perspective.

Some of you on Peer-to-Peer are familiar with my stuff in the genres I know pretty well, so would really appreciate responses from you. But any feedback from those who have had a similar dilemma is appreciated. Thanks in advance!

I would say focus for now. You can always show your other capabilities later.

If it's been a few years - do some research - there are places now that are willing to do small runs at a very reasonable price. Which makes a lot more sense for what you're doing.
