Regarding Hip Hop instrumentals

Hey Folks,
I am a little confused about hip Hop instrumentals. When there is a listing for one, are they looking for music that would be a literal backdrop for a rapper to rap over or an instrumental that sounds like the Hip Hop genre with a melody, etc?
Hip Hop is not my strong genre to begin with but seems like something I would like to try.
