In Canada we have SOCAN which is affiliated with ASCAP.
Your country should have a registry like ASCAP which is also affiliated with the US registry's.
You need to join one. Publishers will not touch your music unless it is registered with a recognized
registry.

I've subscribed to this thread. I live in the Bahamas and would also like to join an affiliate of ASCAP. I think I remember there was one for the Caribbean. Not sure about South America. I was told no point in joining one unless you have a deal on the table. But have been told recently since I have or had 2 songs on local radio I should join one. though I dont expect much income from local radio.

I followed that advice, and then wished I would have joined BEFORE I had a deal offered. It would have made things run a lot smoother if I'd already been a member.

Sorry for the dumb question guys but are these some kind of song writers agencies you sign up to? Is it like officially registering yourself as a song writer?
Thanks

No such thing as a dumb question!
PRO (Performance Rights Organization) is an organization that collects royalties on your behalf for your music. Whether that music is being played on radio, television, film, or being used by other artists - you are entitled to royalties. But in order for them to collect on your behalf you need to be signed up with them. There are different organizations in different countries, usually having agreements with each other for international play.
Here's the basics from wikipedia -

And if you do a google search, I expect you'll find tons of more detailed info out there.
