Genres - How Targeted?

Hi Everyone,

I watched Taxi TV yesterday and Michael said it would be good to bring a demo CD with some songs on it and that knowing your genre is very important. But if you write electronic, house, dance, pop, dubstep and hip hop how specific does the genre need to be?

I'm thinking for what I do I would say electronic? or maybe electronic dance but also I want to do hip hop and dubstep stuff.

What do you all think? How specific does the genre need to be?

Thanks for any feedback. Much appreciated! 8-)

If you are working with a music library they will expect you to be specific. You may be given a list of genres to choose from for the metadata of your song on the libraries website. Being accurate makes it possible for the library to point a music supervisor to what he is looking for in a song or instrumental track.

The following link maybe of help. I would be interested in knowing if their are specific websites for understanding genres that taxi members rely on for accurate identification.

Thanks Allen. Much appreciate the links! 8-) I guess we need to be very specific for the libraries. I'm thinking for myself Electronic with sub categories for each song like Dubstep, House, Hip Hop? Edm etc...

I wondered about this too... I write in several "genres"

I wonder what would be wrong with bringing several "themed" CD's including a "sampler."

Hey Russell, yes I was thinking that. each cd could have its own genre. depending on who you give it to but maybe its best to stick to one main genre you do like Michael was talking about last Monday on Taxi TV?

When you say "bring" are you talking about bringing to the Road Rally?

I think you can put everything on one CD (but make several copies of it) and just highlight the specific tracks each time for whichever situation presents itself. Because between all the different listening panels, people you might meet, library owners, mentors, etc., you never really know which songs you're gonna need.

Also, you can do multiple genres if you want. Just make sure each song fits into a specific genre. I think that's what they were talking about. But bringing different CDs for different genres isn't a bad idea either.

Hi Shane yes its for the Road Rally.. I pretty much mostly got electronic dance stuff so have decided to put 6 dance tracks on one CD. I don't expect to get any placements or anything like that in year 1 its mostly to have a record of what I've done in year 1 and get some feedback from the panellist so next year I can improve.

Cool, sounds like you're all set. Just remember to bring several copies of that CD though, because for some opps you'll need to drop off the CD and you may never see it again (or you may be giving them away to some people or whatever).
