Paying producers as a DIY musician/songwriter

Hi,
As a DIY musician recording in studios, I've been trying to figure out what a producer should get . With the music industry changing so rapidly, it seems some of the advice in Passman's book and other books I've read might be dated. Anyone have thoughts or experiences on what seems fair? Thanks. As a side note, I read Courtney Love's letter to artists and the problems people are running into, for example no health care coverage.
