How Do You Handle A Direct Request For Music?

How do you handle a request for music from a small-time movie maker? I had this circumstance a few years back. The movie (titled: "The Old Livingston House") was made and included three of my songs. The writer/director of the film had me sign a license agreement. I didn't get any upfront money and was under the impression that performance royalties would be paid by BMI if it ever was shown on TV. I don't think it ever has, and I'm not really worried about it. But since learning more about this end of the music business from all of you I am now wondering what I would do if I was ever approached directly again from a film, TV, or TV commercial production company.

I guess if a library handles the music then the license is handled by them. But how do you handle the licensing if their is no "middle-man"?

Thanks for your time.
