You have to resign from ASCAP first. Once that becomes effective, you can sign up with BMI.

Yes, check to see when you can resign.
Login to ASCAP and click on profile, then membership status. There should be a message stating when you joined and when you can resign. It’s only a 3 month period every year.

Quite a few folks on here have switched from ASCAP to BMI. If you mainly place vocal tracks, switching may be a good idea. BMI pays more (right now!) for vocals than instrumentals We've seen lots of times where an ASCAP member and BMI member are co-writers on a vocal placement. The BMI member gets paid more. Also BMI pays bonus dollars for placements longer than a certain length (I think 1 minute). For instrumentals I've heard mixed results as far as comparisons though I know a number of instrumental cue writers who switched and are glad they did.
I'm still with ASCAP.
Good luck!
