Exclusive Question

I'm asking a dumb question -- but that's my job :

If you sign an exclusive deal where the other party owns 100% of the publishing and you own the songwriting part, does that mean you can't release your song at all or:
- you just have to give the other party a publishers share if you post/sell the song on CD or streaming service?
- do you need to ask permission to release your song on some other medium?

Or is your song 100% dependent on the other party to do something with?

thanks in advance!

Doug

In short, when you sign exclusively, you cannot sell your tunes anywhere else.
Some libraries may allow you to post it on sites like SoundCloud, but normally there is nothing else you can do on your own

In my experience most exclusive publishers don't allow you to promote/sell songs signed exclusively. There is one exclusive publisher I have songs with who does allow me to sell on itunes, make youtube videos etc. So i guess the short answer is ask your publisher what they're cool with.
