Hey all,

I've been a TAXI member for two years and have had the good fortune of getting my music into several different libraries through TAXI. As result, I recently found out about two small placements (which has me celebrating because it's been a dream of mine).

I do have a (probably silly) question, though. One of the libraries is essentially a label within a large, well-known production music company. I was recently contacted by a representative from the larger company requesting payment info, saying that I am owed 'composer fees' for two of the albums that my music was featured on.

Is a 'composer fee' synonymous with an advance? Or is it money owed for placements?? I'm happy either way, but my curiosity is killing me!

I suspect its effectively a sync fee (although its probably your share of a blanket license deal). Its a nice addition to your earnings from performance royalties but paid by the licensor (the library) rather than your PRO. If you read your contract with that library it should explain your entitlement and how/when they distribute such things. Note that there might be some threshold to exceed before they pay out, even if you get notification that there's money waiting. Its common for libraries to pay it directly into your bank account once you've provided the relevant information. Always take the usual precautions when giving out such details, but reputable libraries should keep those details safely on file. For peace of mind you could always call (or email) your contact and ask how best to proceed.

Thank you very much Telefunkin - I'll have to review my contract again, but I bet you're right about the blanket license. That sheds some light on my confusion - I'm new at this, so I really appreciate it.
